Would you like to try the experience of " digging " a truffle out of the soil for the first time under the guidance of an expert truffle hunter and his dogs ? Would you like to learn all the secrets of Tuscan truffles ? Their characteristics, properties, the different varieties, how to store and how to use them? In short, would you like to enter the mysterious world of truffles? Come on one of the truffle hunting excursions organized on our own land by the “Fattoria Le Pietre Vive di Montaperti”, a working and holiday farm located on the outskirts of Chianti and the Crete Senesi regions, just 10 km from the historic center of Siena, just by the site of the famous battle of Monteaperti of 1260.
Our meeting point for all the truffle hunts is the car park at the farm, whether for the excursions in the woods just above the farm or the alternative truffle hunting area a few kilometers further afield. Here you will meet up with your expert truffle hunter and his wonderful dogs. It is without doubt these animals that make truffle hunting possible. They are a special breed known as “Lagotto”. They are working dogs with natural gift for searching and an excellent nose which makes this breed very efficient in hunting for truffles. The Lagotto is loyal, keen, affectionate, very attached to his owner but sociable with others too....a great companion on our truffle hunt.
To help you get the best of the companionship of the truffle hunter, a mine of information on truffles, the dogs, the woods and countryside and the local area in general and the friendly, hardworking four legged hunters you will be accompanied by an English speaking interpreter - generally the interpreter who will also assist you during the cooking classes (Truffle hunt-Cooking class package) and so will be able to give you tips on storing and using the truffles once you get them into the kitchen too.
The time and day must be agreed upon depending not only on the weather and the time of year but also on the availability of the truffle hunter and his dogs.
In spring and summer, moreover when the weather does not allow the dogs to work at their best during the day it is necessary go truffle hunting in the early morning or to postpone it until the evening.
The hunt usually lasts between 1 to 2 hours depending on the weather and the luck of the hunt!
Please remember to come prepared, with comfortable clothing and footwear for a hike through the woods in whatever the season of your truffle hunt.
If you would like to taste the truffles found during the excursion, you can either have a little tasting session with delicious truffle "crostini" and a glass of our own Chianti Colli Senese wine or if you prefer, you could stop off at the Le Pietre Vive restaurant at the farm house (www.lepietreviverestaurant.com) and try some of the various dishes made with these precious fruits of the earth.
Furthermore, if you would like to learn how to make the best use of truffles, after the truffle hunt you can participate in a Cooking Class with Nonna Ciana (www.cookingclassesnonnaciana.com), in the large family kitchen of the farm.
